Welcome to 6th Grade World Cultures

Welcome to the 2016/2017 school year! I know many of you are excited to begin your journey at Farley Middle School and I’m excited to meet you.

My name is Brian Ruiz, but you can call me Coach Ruiz. This will be my 7th year in education and my 3rd year teaching 6th grade World Cultures at Farley. During the school year, my plan will be to open your door to see the world beyond the United States.

Conference and Contact
My conference period will be from 1:32 - 2:17, this will be my time to meet with parents, respond to emails, or make phone calls. I am also coaching, so my availability will be limited during sports seasons but I check my email regularly and will respond in a timely manner.

Classroom Procedures
Entering the Classroom
1. Wait outside against the lockers until told to enter the classroom.
2. Walk to your assigned seat and sit down quietly.
3. Wait for your notebook and then get started with your warm up.
End of Class
1. Begin packing up your things only after I tell you to begin.
2. Stay seated until I dismiss you.
3. The bell does not dismiss you from class, I do.
Leaving the Room
1. Raise your hand and then ask for permission after being called on.
2. Once permission is granted, tear out and turn in a hippo buck (three will be given per semester).
3. Fill out the orange form on the clipboard by the door and take it with you.
4. Remain silent in the hallway and return quickly to class.
Getting up during class
1. You must have permission to get up and move around, unless otherwise noted in classroom instructions.
2. If your pencil needs to be sharpened, hold it up in the air, tip side up and wait for me to sharpen it for you.
Learning happens in the classroom; therefore you will not be allowed to leave class on a regular basis. Please make sure you go to the restroom or get the supplies you need before entering my class.

Discipline Policy
A lack of discipline in my room is not tolerated. You will be given a warning if you are talking without permission, not doing the work that is assigned when asked or getting up without permission.
The second time you will be given a consequence that is comparable to the offense and a parent contact.
A third time you will receive a referral. Referral are rarely given in my classroom but I will not hesitate to write one when it comes to disrespect, lying, not keeping your hands to yourself, throwing things in the classroom or any other offense that violates a school policy.

Student who fall below the passing score of 70 on a test will have the option to correct the test for a passing grade. All test corrections must be completed in class during the time they are given.

Late Work
1 Day = 10 points off of grade
2 Days = 20 points off of grade
Any work 3 or more days late will be given an MSAI. This will have you do the assignment during your lunch or after school until it is completed. Your grade will be determined by the effort and will be graded
